The Last of Us HBO Episode 8 Teases Season 2’s Abby

The Last of Us HBO Episode 8, titled ‘When We Are In Need,’ teased Abby’s quest for vengeance, touching on similar themes to those woven throughout her story as audiences were introduced to the Silver Lake community. While Abby has not yet been introduced in the HBO show, fans of the critically-acclaimed video game series from Naughty Dog will have recognized some of the actions taken in Episode 8 as a foreshadowing of what is to come.

In the latest installment, fans watched as Silver Lake preacher and leader David gave his community of religious worshippers the opportunity for revenge against Joel, who had killed the father of one of the young girls within the resort. This added another layer of context and a deeper meaning to the scenario which plays out in the first Last of Us game, introducing a pair of new characters into the mix.

Note that spoilers for the Last of Us video games will be discussed, which may directly impact the story being told in the Last of Us HBO show.

Revealing that the man Joel had killed following their attempted ambush at the university to be a father called Alec, The Last of Us HBO Episode 8 also introduced his daughter, Hannah. Visibly emotional throughout her time on screen, she demanded that both Joel and Ellie be killed if they were found by the Silver Lake community, as revenge for the murder of her father.

For those who have played The Last of Us 2, this all may feel familiar. That is because when they are introduced to dual protagonist Abby in the game, they quickly discover that she is on her own path of vengeance following the death of her father. Hannah’s own murderous intent is just a taste of what Abby will offer, when she undoubtedly makes her debut further down the line.

The Last of Us Season 1 on HBO and HBO Max will conclude with Episode 9 on Sunday, March 12, 2023 at 6 p.m. PT/9 p.m. ET.
